So Indifferent Origins

How it all Started

Growing up I was a very creative person, but I lost that passion in high school which resulted in me feeling directionless. While trying to put an image to what I was experiencing, I came across the word “indifference.” This is where I came up with the name So Indifferent, which perfectly captured the brand.

I purchased a sketchbook and some pencils and tried to reignite that creative fire. While words were able to describe the surface of my experience, images allowed me to get deeper.

Within a year I came up with several shirt designs, honed my Photoshop skills, and developed the confidence to apply and get into college.

The Indifferent Face

Inspiration can be found everywhere! One day while taking the bus, I heard a girl wearing headphones say to her friend “I’m not hearing you” – this idea stuck with me, and the Indifferent Face was born. The headphones in the initial design were a representation of me blocking out the noise of the outside world. I wanted the face to be expressionless, in part because I didn’t feel confident drawing faces, but also as a way of allowing the viewer to apply their own interpretation of the character’s feelings.

I created popular video game, movie, and TV character versions of the Indifferent Face (Star Wars, Left for Dead), as well as customized family prints for clients. It was the start of my entrepreneurial endeavors (clothing projects) AND the reason I decided to pursue Graphic Design.

All designs were made in Photoshop, before I knew how to use Illustrator.
