The Creative Ecosystem

From the very beginning my goal with The Fear Theory ecosystem was to encourage creative expression while exploring mental health in an accessible way for both parents and children. The entire series is meant to act as a bridge, allowing parents and children to reclaim quality time without the use of technology. The Cadet Package was my way of further supporting that goal. At the time, I had limited resources to bring my original vision to life, but it pushed me to get creative.

The Importance of Creativity

Looking back at my own journey, I’ve found that art and other forms of creative expression provide powerful outlets, for managing my emotions, self-esteem, and confidence. The more time I spent exploring creative outlets, resulted in me being less reliant on external validation (social media). For children, creative outlets also serve as a preventive tool, giving them space for self-expression, all while strengthening visual, motor, and social skills.

Mental health difficulties are very common among children and young adults. Ever since 2020, there has been a sharp rise in children and youth of all ages experiencing anxiety and depression. The statistics below highlight the need that drove me to create The Cadet Package.

  • According to the CMHA 70% of mental health issues have their onset during childhood or adolescence.
  • A major roadblock to mental illness are stigmas and discrimination
  • Teachers agree that anxiety disorders with 73% saying it was a pressing concern.
  • Once the problem was addressed, half of Ontario parents had a number of challenges getting the services they needed:
    • 65% said the primary reason was long wait times
    • 30% of services didn’t meet the needs of the child
    • 26% didn’t know where to go
    • 14% didn’t offer services where they lived

By tapping into my own experience and understanding of the many benefits of creativity, I went to work with what I had. I knew that over time I could continue developing and expanding the idea and offerings, so it was important for me to just START!

What’s Inside?

I wanted the experience of receiving the Cadet Package to feel like opening a birthday gift or Christmas present. To create that experience, I added a personal touches: each package was labeled “Top Secret” and included a handwritten letter, thanking each Cadet (I referred to each child as a Cadet) for joining the mission. To top it off, I personally hand-delivered many of the Packages to those within the city.

Here’s a look at what’s inside:

  • The Fear Theory
  • Bookmarks
  • Postcard
  • + Handwritten thank you card
  • Pencil and Crayons
  • Mini Sketchbook
  • Printable Activities
  • Coaster
  • Stickers

I also did a limited edition Cadet Package that included a branded pencil case and large sketchbook.

At the end of the day, while the The Cadet Package and creative expression aren’t ultimate solutions to mental health issues challenges, they offer tools that can support parents as they navigate this complex landscape.
