The Stone Creative Process
While I was working on the first book in the series, I was also working on illustrations for “The Stone”. When the creative flow hits, I just have to go with it! I documented a lot of the process because I wanted to showcase how some of the rough sketches, ideas, and concepts came together to create this book. I believe that inspiration can often be found in seeing someone else’s process, not just the end product.
As with everything in the Fear Theory universe, the process begins with my sketchbook. The main difference this time around was making use of my Surface tablet, which allowed me to actually draw on my screen. As you can imagine, it made things 10x more efficient when it came to recreating designs in Photoshop and other software. I also created short 2-D animations for social media. It was really cool bringing my illustrations to life!

Process Work
Once again, I made sure to use my sketchbook to capture my ideas, concepts, and creative process.
I also used my Surface Tablet and stylus to test ideas and illustrations. As mentioned before, being able to actually draw on my screen made working in Photoshop 10x more efficient.
Graphic Design
With “The Stone”, I wanted the illustrations to have a bit more polish and refinement. Although it isn’t as rough as the first book, everything is hand-drawn from front to back. I hope that readers returning to the series are able to see my growth as an illustrator.
I created a series of short animations that feature simple animations, sound effects, and music as a way of adding depth to the illustrations, bringing them to life.

Bringing It All to Life
The Fear Theory: The Stone was self-published and officially released in November 2023. You can learn more about the second edition of The Cadet Package here!
It’s hard to believe this all started with a sketchbook, a pencil, and a little boredom.
